Your “friends”

This is a thought provoking presentation from ex-Googler, soon to be FacebookerPaul Adams.  Well worth flicking through the 224 slides. It has got me thinking about the implications for employers and further made me question the true value of the trendy construct of “influence”, as it relates to the social web.

Creative personal marketing documents

With the mainstreaming of social media, the traditional CV / resume looks retro and quaint. Let’s face it, most CVs / resumes send a message to the rest of the world that we are devoid of any level of self-expression, creativity and artistic flair. Check out these refreshingly visual examples

Bribing fans to like your Facebook Page

Have you noticed a trend? Some Facebook Page owners are playing a game, offering all manner of contests, promotions, incentives, and giveaways to increase their fan numbers. They’re tapping into a motivational driver that appears to resonate with large numbers of the Facebook population.

I’ve always maintained it’s not how many, it’s who is in a community that matters. Large numbers and reach don’t necessarily result in business success or quality outcomes for Page owners, especially if the wrong people are lured to join a fan base. Nor do they add true value for the community. I’ve left Pages that overtly and relentlessly play this game.

Also, some Page owners are playing a risky game by repeatedly breaching Facebook’s terms in their race to grow fan numbers.

Are there any Pages that you feel are playing this game a little too much?

Turning the tables - showcasing Facebook fans

All too often brands, celebrities and employers use the social web to pump out content, and race to grow fan numbers, with little regard to the true needs of their target audiences. This week my client Deloitte New Zealand launched a new initiative, Fan Showcase, on their award-winning Facebook page. This builds upon other elements of the firm’s social recruiting strategy, like live-streaming Facebook shows and video Q&A. A strong community understands and recognizes that its members have specific interests and needs. The Deloitte NZ Fan Showcase captures on video the backgrounds, questions and desires of the community. We believe that building community involves, as Chris Brogan has stated, changing the direction of the chairs.

Jobseeking in 3D

I often stumble across innovative approaches that jobseekers take to woo employers.

Here are a couple of recent examples that caught my attention:
